Featuring Frankincense:  the "King of Oils"

Frankincense has long been recognized for its value, especially as an essential oil.  Historically, Frankincense was used in religious ceremonies for spiritual benefits as well as in perfumes and salves for soothing and beautifying the skin.  Ancients also used it for respiratory health, circulation, eye sight, and digestive support where they chewed on the resin like gum.  It was also a prized commodity for trade.

Frankincense essential oil has a very wide variety of compounds which makes it a very versatile oil.  There is a saying – if you don’t know what to use, use frankincense.  It is very gentle, and has so many benefits that chances are it won’t do any harm, and it might just help.  Its scent is soothing and uplifting at the same time, serving as an effective mood balancer.  It is rich in monoterpenes, which have been found to promote healthy inflammatory response in respiratory tissues.  Rich in alpha pinene, frankincense is also beneficial for the skin, including reducing the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes, and healing from cuts and burns.  It is mild, and can be used topically, aromatically and internally.  Here are some suggestions for usage:

  • Use in a room diffuser or dab on specific areas of the body to uplift, enhance, and stabilize mood.

  • Add to your moisturizer to reduce appearance of skin imperfections and even skin tones.

  • Use in bath for relaxation.

  • Rub on your hands after a long day of gardening or working with hands for soothing effect.

  • Blend with lavender, patchouli, and sandalwood in a carrier oil for a warm, earthy, and restorative scent (my personal favorite) or experiment with other oils to discover your personal favorite blend.

Frankincense oil is distilled from the resin of Boswellia trees, of which there are many species, but generally only 4 produce true frankincense resin which the oil comes from.  doTERRA’s frankincense uses 3 of these species – carterii, sacra and frereana – for desired chemical compositions and specific combinations to distill a certified pure therapeutic grade natural essential oil exclusive in its benefits, quality and purity.  Please be aware that many frankincense oils sold inexpensively on the market contain synthetic compounds and adulteration.
