The Shadow Yoga system of Hatha Yoga utilizes the principles and practices common to classical Hatha Yoga and the self cultivating aspects of martial arts and dance.  It places great importance on preparing the physical body and cultivating awareness of the energetic system as a foundation for progressing towards more internal aspects of Hatha Yoga.  Its distinctive preparatory work is called the “Preludes,” which are dynamic standing sequences involving strong leg work, linear and circular movements, coordination of limbs, rhythmic breathing and bandha.

The workshop will introduce the fundamentals of Shadow Yoga, as well as the warm-ups called “Dasha Chalanam” and “Jiva Chalanam.”  The 3-session course will present the basic stances and karanas (dynamic movements integrating the limbs and spine) in a systematic, progressive manner to promote body memory, facilitate refinement, and encourage home practice.  The workshop AND the 3-session course together will offer a complete experience to students new to Shadow Yoga and is a requirement for studying the 3 Prelude forms of Shadow Yoga.

Muscle and connective tissue over-use and under-use from daily living can cause discomfort, perpetuate dysfunctional posture, and stop us from moving and living optimally.  Each week, we will explore self-massage techniques to undo tension in different regions of the body, followed by a guided meditation practiced in Savasana to release unconscious holding patterns.  End your workweek by rolling out knots and stress accumulated from sitting, sleeping, and various activities of your life.  Leave each session ready to begin your weekend more balanced, integrated, and at ease in your body and mind.
