Surrender and Surprise; Let Good Happen to You

Updated: Jan 30, 2021

"I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding." ~ John O'Donohue

Of all the incredible teachings I received from my teacher during my time away this summer, I am most grateful for his simple blessing - "When you go home, let good happen to you." Not that I was consciously practicing this or seeking it out, but something incredibly good did happen to me. In the quote above, the late, great Irish poet and philosopher John O'Donohue beautifully captures the element of surrender and surprise in a metaphor of a flowing river. On few occasions in life, if we are lucky, we can relax into the flow of life enough to let good happen to us and be "carried by the surprise of our own unfolding." In so doing, we allow freshness to return to the frame of our vision and goodness to quietly shape our lives.

May we live like a river flows, surprised by its own unfolding. May we let good happen to us!
